About the game

What is Dotsu?

Dotsu is a colour-matching puzzle where nothing falls. Pick up any big dot and put it on any square: it swaps with another dot, slides into an empty square, or lands on a small dot and squashes it. A move does not have to make a match, but every move uses one from your count. Line up three or more of one colour across, down or along either diagonal and they clear. The small dots are colours growing in — after each move they swell into full dots and new ones sprout in the gaps, so you can always see what is coming next. Each level sets its own goals within a fixed number of moves: collect a number of one colour, clear the dashed squares by matching on them, or free the dots pinned in place by black centres. Line up four or more, or a square of four, and you make a special dot that sweeps a row, a diagonal or a patch of the board. From level 25 the difficulty rises and falls in cycles of ten: levels ending in 5 are breathers, levels ending in 0 are peaks with a gold level number. There is no last level: the boards keep coming, in new colours.

How to play

How to play Dotsu

STEP 1

Move any dot anywhere

Drag a big dot to any square, or tap it and then tap the square. It swaps with a dot, slides into a gap, or squashes a small dot. Every move uses one move, match or not.

STEP 2

Line up three

Three or more of one colour in a row, a column or a diagonal clear away. After your move the small dots grow into full dots and new small dots sprout in the empty squares.

STEP 3

Meet the goals

The goals sit above the board: collect a colour, clear the dashed squares by matching a dot that stands on them, or free the dots pinned by black centres. Finish every goal before your moves run out.

STEP 4

Make specials

Four in a line makes a Liner that sweeps its row, column or diagonal. Five in a line makes a Blaster that clears the squares around it. A 2×2 square makes a Shuriken that sweeps both diagonals. Two lines crossing make a Pulser. Match a special to set it off — any special caught in the sweep fires too.

FAQ

Good to know

Is Dotsu free to play?

Yes. It runs in your browser, with no download and no sign-up.

Does every move have to make a match?

No. You can move a dot to any square to set up a later match. Each move still uses one from your count, so plan ahead.

What are the small dots?

Colours growing in. After each move they become full dots, and new small dots appear in empty squares. Dropping a big dot on a small one squashes it.

What do the dashed squares and black dots mean?

A dashed square clears when you match the dot standing on it; a double-dashed square needs two matches. A dot with a black centre is pinned: you cannot move it or drop anything on it, but you free it by matching it where it stands.

What happens when I run out of moves?

You can retry the level. When an ad is available you can also watch one for five more moves on the same board, once per try.

Does Dotsu ever run out of levels?

No. The boards keep coming, in new colours. Your level is saved in this browser, so you carry on where you stopped.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The board is built for a portrait screen and works the same with a thumb or a mouse.
